Common questions
How does the How Much Can I Borrow calculator work?
You enter your income, deposit, debts and household details. We apply servicing test rates, living-cost benchmarks and loan-to-value limits, then show an estimated borrowing range.
Is How Much Can I Borrow free?
Yes, and it does not require a credit check. You can optionally ask a mortgage adviser to review your result.
Is How Much Can I Borrow a lender or a bank?
No. We do not lend money and we are independent of any single lender.
How much deposit do I need?
Most owner-occupier loans need around 20% to avoid low-equity margins. First-home buyers may qualify for low-deposit options such as a Kāinga Ora First Home Loan, subject to criteria.
How much can I borrow for a home loan in New Zealand?
It depends on household income less living costs, debts and credit limits, tested at a rate above the advertised one. Your deposit then caps the purchase price through LVR limits.
Will using this affect my credit score?
No. There is no credit enquiry. Only a formal application to a lender creates a credit check.
How accurate is the estimate?
It uses the same kinds of test rates, living-cost benchmarks and LVR limits lenders apply, so it's a realistic planning range — not a binding number.
Can I use KiwiSaver for my first home?
You may be able to if you meet the first-home withdrawal criteria, including a minimum contribution period. Check the current rules with your provider.
What is a Kāinga Ora First Home Loan?
A government-backed loan letting eligible first-home buyers purchase with a low deposit, subject to income caps, price caps and lender criteria.
What happens after I submit my details?
If you request a review, a mortgage adviser may contact you to discuss your options. There is no obligation.
Can self-employed buyers use it?
Yes. Enter your business or contract income. Lenders usually want to see financial records, but this gives you a starting point.
Is the result financial advice?
No. It is indicative only and not personalised financial advice. Speak with a licensed adviser before deciding.
Where do the test rates and limits come from?
They are aligned with what New Zealand lenders and the Reserve Bank currently apply. Rates and rules change, so treat the result as a planning range.
